National Parks

In Colombia, there are currently 56 national parks and nature reserves, the largest in the Amazon. The other parks, between eight and more than a million acres wide, are distributed throughout the country. Colombia is involved in a "National System of Protected Areas" (Sistema Nacional de Áreas Protegidas / SINAP), via which the refuges are constantly monitored. Each designated conservation area receives a management plan which is administered by the SINAP on the basis of a law adopted in 2003. The competent authority for this is subdivided by the Colombian Ministry of Environment. The total area of all parks is 12602320.7 hectares (as of 11/2011), more than 12 % of the national territory.
