San Agustin

San Agustin, Huila

San Agustin is located within the majestic Andes, on a flat towards the Amazon lowlands. At the same time the village is not far away from the elevation of the Páramo, wherefore the variety of climate and vegetation zones made this area to a densely populated center in pre-colombian times.

A high-standing culture was developed, which has left to the posterity monumental grave-sites and hundreds of stone sculptures. Still, a little is known about the so-called San Agustin culture. Many of the statues, which are between one and seven meters high and weigh over one ton, express the duality of life between sun and moon, and between death and birth.

Since 1995 the park is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Although the main attractions are the archeological parks, San Agustin is expanding its tourism offer. Mountain climbing, rafting or hiking is offered, as for instance to the lagoon of Magdalena, which leads through the spectacular landscape of the Páramo.
