Where the mountains melt into the sky

The Sierra Nevada del Cocuy is one of the most beautiful mountain massifs in South America. More than 25 mountain peaks are permanently snow-covered and with 5300 m the Ritacuba Blanco is the highest mountain. The national park attracts with white glittering glaciers, deep blue lakes and a unique vegetation, which contains ethnic mountain forest on the plateaus, Andean forest and treeless alpine tundra (span. Páramo). In addition, the vegetation here features about 700 species of vascular plants, representing 83% of the high-mountain species in Colombia and herewith it is the most diverse high-mountain vegetation in the world! But also the wildlife has rarities to offer, like the elk, the Andean bear, the Andean condor or the Páramo deer. The temperatures are between 4°C and 20°C depending on the altitude and solar irradiation. In higher regions, the temperature can drop below cero at night.

To savor this experience to the fullest, one should at least calculate to spend one week. The list of the points of interest is long and depends on being a professional climber or just a nature enthusiastic adventurer.
